Why This Coffee Matters

Cerro Azul has become one of the defining names in competition coffee, producing Gesha lots that consistently demonstrate exceptional precision and clarity. This Competition Selection Natural offers a distinctive interpretation of the cultivar, where bright citrus, blueberry, and aromatic herbs are complemented by layers of pineapple and warm spice.

Rather than relying solely on floral intensity, this coffee reveals remarkable structure. Its lively malic and citrus acidity, silky body, and lingering finish create a cup that evolves as it cools, rewarding careful brewing with increasing complexity.

For Ogni, Cerro Azul represents a benchmark of producer precision—showcasing how meticulous farming and patient natural processing can preserve the elegance of Gesha while developing greater sweetness and depth.

Producer Background

Café Granja La Esperanza is one of Colombia's most respected specialty coffee producers, recognised for cultivating rare coffee varieties across its collection of farms in Valle del Cauca.

Cerro Azul is among the estate's most celebrated farms, producing highly sought-after Gesha lots that regularly appear in national and international brewing competitions. Every Competition Selection lot represents a carefully chosen microlot selected for its exceptional quality and consistency.

About the Cultivar

Gesha is renowned for its refined aromatics, elegant acidity, and remarkable cup clarity.

At Cerro Azul, the combination of high elevation and careful cultivation produces a distinctly vibrant expression of the cultivar. While maintaining Gesha's signature elegance, this lot develops a unique profile of citrus, blueberry, aromatic herbs, pineapple, and subtle nutmeg, resulting in a cup that is both expressive and beautifully balanced.

About the Process

Natural

Only fully ripe cherries are harvested before flotation removes lower-density fruit.

Fermentation takes place in open tanks for approximately 80 hours, allowing the fruit to gradually develop sweetness and complexity.

Following fermentation, the cherries spend three days in mechanical dryers maintained between 38–40°C, before being transferred to raised drying beds for a further 12–15 days of sun drying.

This extended drying process develops sweetness and depth while maintaining excellent clarity and definition in the final cup.

Terroir

Located in Trujillo, Valle del Cauca, Cerro Azul benefits from conditions well suited to producing exceptional Gesha.

For this lot, CGLE documents:

  • Elevation: 1,752–1,941 m.a.s.l.

  • Annual rainfall: Approximately 2,200 mm

  • Temperature: 15–21°C

  • Relative humidity: 85–86%

  • Cultivated area: 17.56 hectares

The cool mountain climate encourages slow cherry maturation, allowing sugars and aromatic compounds to develop gradually before harvest.

In the Cup

Bright citrus provides immediate lift before ripe blueberry sweetness emerges through the middle of the cup. Delicate aromatic herbs and notes of pineapple add freshness and complexity, while a subtle hint of nutmeg brings warmth to the finish.

A silky body supports vibrant malic and citrus acidity, creating a clean, structured cup with exceptional length and balance.
